 It all ends in Tears

A final humiliation for CD Torrevieja saw them lose 4-1 at home in front of a miserly crowd, with players in tears at the final whistle, emotionally charged with the ignominy of relegation out of the National Spanish football league.

It had started extremely well with Torry playing bright attractive football. The manager gave several younger players the opportunity to show their skills and all did that magnificently. Teenager Lewis Booker captained the side with grit and determination, winning key tackles in midfield and using the ball intelligently. Joel, Damian and Nica all looked comfortable, able to show the talent they have and dominating the opposition. Before the quarter hour mark, Torry were in front. Precise passing down the right allowed the ultra consistent Vicente Boix to pass the ball to Damian just inside the Borriol penalty area. Damian with his back to goal, held off his marker, then swivelled sweetly on to his left foot and drove the ball low into the far corner of the net.

Torry should have led 3-0 at half time, as two wonderful chances were spurned soon after. Borja Mir made an intelliegent diagonal run and was given an inch perfect pass. He gathered the ball inside the box, took it round the keeper but then instead of hitting it first time, delayed his shot until the angle was so acute that the best he could do was to ram it into the side netting. Damian then was presented with a glorious chance, when five yards free inside the box. he too did not shoot early, instead allowing Edi in the Borriol goal to advance close to him and smother his effort.

Torry's lead lasted until 51 minutes when Borriol equalised in bizarre fashion. A high ball was launched at the Torry goal and Buba followed it unhindered. He caought it a few feet from his goal line, but then continued to back pedal, carrying the ball and himself into the net! It was an astonishing piece of ineptness and was all the encouragement the visitors needed. Nine minutes later, Badre put Borriol ahead before the referee awarded a penalty for a foul which was committed just outside the penalty area. Colomer put Buba the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Shortly after Pedreno made a triple substitution, bringing on his senior personnel, one of whom was Lewis Allen. The young Brit added more spirit and strength to attacks and almost pulled one back for the side when he dashed on to the end of a good pass and lobbed the keeper only to see the wind take his shot wide of the far post. As it happened Hector added a fourth for Borriol to finish off a resoundingly miserable day for CD Torrevieja and their fans. Farewells were bade and embraces exhanged, with best wishes communicated and hopes expressed that all would meet again.

Fans left the ground knowing thay would follow their team in the Preferente come September and buoyed with the prospect of seeing away matches, as well as home games, with clubs all residing within the Alicante region. They also vowed to put as much pressure on the Town Hall as possible to repair the Vicente Garcia and get the club back where they belong.
