Bottom of the Heap!

Coaches seem to be obsessed with insisting their teams pass the ball relentlessly. Pep Guardiola sent the England keeper to Italy in favour of a goalkeeper who was a better passer of the ball! Judged on his debut in the Premier League, he is not a patch on Hart, or Marcano for that matter!

Marcano made several outstanding saves, twice coming out fast to tackle an opponent and block one on one opportunities for Olimpic. But even his excellence could not prevent Torry falling to consecutive 3-0 defeats. Vicente Boix was also in top form, blazing forward to support the attack and putting in some terrific crosses. In the second half with the score at 1-0, he flew down the right flank, controlled the ball and then nutmegged his opponent, rounding him and getting to the byeline before delivering a perfect pass to Carrasco who was waiting in the centre on the edge of the six yard box. Carrasco swept the ball three yards over the bar in what could have been a pivotal moment.

Torry were out battled for all of the first half, Olimpic being quicker to the ball, first to react to loose balls, several players running selflessly into spaces and constantly putting pressure on the ball when Torry were in possession. For their part, Torry continued to pass the ball from goalkeeper, through the defensive players, before giving it away, or resorting to a speculative long ball in the hope that someone would get to it. Someone did, invariably an Olimpic defender. In the entirety of the ninety minutes Torry never had one single shot on target.

The starting eleven was a surprising, but perhaps understandable with the thinking that wholesale change was required after the 3-0 home loss to Orihuela. In came Salamanca to lead the line and have his first full start.  Pablo Navas was given his debut with Melli and Pavon also in the starting line up. Dropped to the bench was Abraham and Lewis, with no start for Damian Aguero, only introduced in the 89th minute of play when Torry trailed 3-0! It all smacked of desperation - and desperate it was.

Defensive frailities were at the heart of all the goals. Marc Cosme was unmarked in the box and able to pick his spot on 26 minutes to give Olimpic a deserved advantage at the interval. In the second period, Torry did make a fist of it, being more penetrative, especially through Luis Carlos and Vicente down the wings. However, the truth is that despite the effort in the middle of the park, there were no incisive through balls, no defence splitting passes and little in the way of invention. Surely the talent that is Damian Aguero should have played from the outset to provide the required work effort and ingenuity?

Playing the beefy Salamanca up front was not a bad idea. He is strong, able to hold the ball up and wins his fair share in the air, able to flick on into the forward space for colleagues. The only trouble was that he was not given this service and even if he had, there was no Lewis to feed off his wins! All in all, it looked a mish mash of confused and foolhardy tactics. Martin could only direct the ball to Juanma in the 75th minute as once again the Torry defence found itself floundering and Juanma made no mistake. Two minutes later after a courageous save from Marcano the ball was gathered by the home side and rifled home to complete the scoring and ensure Torry stay plum last of the 21 teams in the group.

After an appeal by Almoradi about the suspension that should have been served by Matheus in the opener against them in which they lost 3-2, the ruling was made in their favour and they were awarded the match by 3-0. Thus Torry has no points and a goal difference of minus 10. The home tie with Rayo Ibsense this Wednesay 14th September (6.30pm kick off at the Nelson Mandela) coulod be explosive in more senses than one.
