MATCH REPORT | UD Beniganim 2 CD Torrevieja 0. Torry beaten at lowly Beniganim!

Match Report: Darryll Wright / Photo: Golsmedia.

On Sunday Torry travelled to the north and inland north of Alcoy to play strugglers UD Beniganim who were in next but last place in the table 4 points away from safety.

Torry were  looking to get back to winning ways after their heavy defeat at home to Torre Levante in their previous game. Martin and Luis Carlos were unavailable through injury although Luis Carlos took up a place on the bernch. Serna returned in goal after suspension and manager Pedreno made several changes leaving out Ruben Suarez, Prieto and Matej and giving starts to Sanchez and Carrasco.

The game kicked off in bright sunshine in front of a crowd of just over 200 in the neat and tidy compact ground. The first 10 minutes were scrappy but as the game progressed the home side seized the initiative and began to control the midfield area. This forced Torry into a rearguard action with Jorge being dominant in the air. Torry didn´t mount any attacks worthy of note. Torry went behind after 23 minutes after poor defending by Torry created a chance for the home side. They moved the ball  and found a man unmarked on the right and he struck the ball beyond the diving Serna into the corner of the net to put them in front. Beniganim continued to play with much more intensity and went in search of a second goal. Around the 30 minute mark they almost doubled their lead when their no.9 just failed to get clean contact on a ball at the far post and it spun agonisingly wide of the post. They didn´t have to wait long though for a few minutes later Higon gave away a free-kick on the left of the Torry area. The free-kick was delivered into the box and their no.9 rose to meet the ball and directed a superb header into the back of the net to extend their lead. This appeared to at last spark some life and greater urgency into the Torry team and had their best spell in the last five minutes of the first half with Higon putting in a cross which was begging for a finish but eluded everybody and then a couple of shots by Lewis and Rafa Gomez which were blocked. Torry went of at half-time for an orange and presumably a few harsh words from the manager. Torry started the better in the second half and began to get more of a foothold on the game as the oppostion sat deeper and behind the ball to protect their 2 goal cushion. Rafa Gomez cut loose and had a shot blocked with Lewis striking the rebound wide. Quintero then had a fierce effort from an acute angle blocked by the keeper. On the hour mark Lewis had a chance after being played in by Carrasco but struck the ball over the top. After 63 minutes Torry manager had had enough and made a triple substitution. Torryy kept up the momentum with Ruben Suarez making an impact.   Torrys best chance of the game fell to Prieto after 80 minutes but with only the keeper to beat he shot straight at him. With the clock ticking down Torry had a final flourish with a fine cross from Quintero finding the head of Lewis who met it well but unfortunately his effort struck the crossbar and went over. In time added on Burguillos had a chance at the far post after Suarez had headed on a Chupe corner but struck the ball wide of the post. The final whistle went. Torry had been pretty dour in the first half and deserved to be behind. They certainly improved in the second half and had to but couldn´t make the breakthrough to get themselves back into the game. On the day they were beaten by a side who appeared to want it more than them as they battle to avoid relegation. The referee was busy booking 4 of the home side and Higon, Javi Selvas, Lewis and Quintero for Torry.

On Sunday Torry are at home to another side near the bottom Bunol and will be looking to get back to winning ways and perform as they did in the second-half at Beniganim and not as they did in the first. The game kicks off at 5.00 pm. Try to be there.
