CD Torrevieja put on the show that the club and fans have known they are capable of and have been waiting for all season. The penny has dropped and the manager freed from having too many options, has examined his squad in detail and selected a side with enterprize, committment, tenacity and most importantly of all - the ability to score!
The game was only two minutes old when the tigrish Lewis latched on to a ball he was about to volley. Quick as a whisk, he saw the keeper off his line and executed a simply suberb lob which was placed to perfection. Throughout the game he battled, competed and got stuck in to much bigger opponents and came out on top. He then had a 30 yard drive saved superbly by Tamarit to deny him a second and after another terrific block by Tamarit in the second period from Higon, the ball came at the Torry striker too quick and he struck it over with the goal at his mercy.
Lewis is a centre forward and that is where he wants to play. He deserves to start there but as the main striker, he will be expected to score regularly, so this must be the start of something special from the 21 year old Brummie. Selvas nodded home a lovely second and had he not, then Quintero was right behind him ready to do the honours. Higon added a third in the second period after a sweet pass from Lewis. Higon had a subdued first 45, but ran riot in the second period thoroughly deserving his debut goal which gave Torry a three goal advantage. Ho too brings fire and robust energy to the team, as well as an eye for goal.
Quintero gave away a penalty which hit the post before Miguel sprang back up and saved the follow up shot in superb fashion. He has covered himself in glory since Oscar injured his hand in Torre Levante and will be hard to dislodge from that number one shirt. Very soon after that penalty miss, the hosts did pull one back and redoubled their eforts to further reduce the deficit. Torry had chances also and the game was thoroughly entertaining, especially being the first away win of the season.
No third division matches this weekend, another mystifying decision by the Valencian F.A., with all other Spanish teams in action. So it is a clash with new boys Rayo Ibense at 5pm on Sunday 13 December at the Nelson Mandela, where more of the same is expected.
