Torrevieja Torment at Ontinyent

CD Torrevieja’s hopes of promotion to Segunda B were given an early reality check in the first game of the Tercera season, away at Ontinyent.  El Salineros were worryingly outplayed by an excellent Ontinyent team and if it were not for the excellence in goal of Oscar, Torrevieja could have been looking at a defeat far greater than 3-0.

There were a few surprises in Pedreno’s first selection of the new campaign.  Luis Carlos, excellent in pre-season, started on the bench with Adrian and Juanma preferred on the flanks.  Striker Juanfran was back from injury to lead the line, but the real surprise was the selection of Carrasco alongside Jorge and Sanchez in a deep midfield role.  The experienced attacker had not starred in that position during pre-season, so it was an unexpected choice.

Ontinyent could not have wished for a better start to their season, as they found themselves 2-0 within quarter of an hour.  CD Torrevieja have developed a worrying habit of being unable to defend set-pieces with conviction, and it was this habit that was to undo them in the 12th minute.  A free kick, whipped in and headed goalwards.  Oscar made a flying save to his right but his defenders failed to support him by not clearing the ball.  It fell to Alex Chico and he was able to tap home from a yard out.

Torrevieja were clearly shell shocked, as Ontinyent immediately attacked down their left from the restart.  Somehow the ball found itself in the area, Oscar unprotected once more, and another tap-in fell to Ayo.

It looked like there would be no way back.  With Ayo dictating the play from the number 10 role inbetween the attack and midfield, Torrevieja had no answer to the slick attacking moves their opponents were conjuring up.  However, fine goalkeeping from Oscar kept the score to 2-0 and his side started to grow into the game, Juanma, the new signing from Hercules, rifled a left footed shot against the crossbar, then moments later hit a dipping volley just over.  Juanfran had a number of half chances, taking three touches where just one would have done.  Ontinyent’s goalkeeper was able to go in at half time completely untroubled.

The second half served up more of the same, Ontinyent able to pick off Torrevieja at will and again it was only smart shot stopping from Oscar that stopped the gap from widening.  Cesar and Luis Carlos entered the fray with little effect and with fifteen to go Ontinyent put the final nail in the Torrevieja coffin.  Another free kick was swung into the box and Lucas Bou was able to get to it ahead of two of his teammates to nod home the third.

Let us remember, seasons are very rarelt decided on the first outing.  Yes, Ontinyent looked a cut above and Torrevieja looked like a different team to the one that had performed so well in pre-season.  There are many matches to come, and it is unlikely that there will be many more teams that are able to attack with such clinical precision.

Torrevieja will be looking to bounce back immediately, with their first home game of the campaign at El Vicente Garcia on Sunday 30th August, 19:00 kick off.  They need their local support now more than ever, as a win against Burriol will lift the heads that are currently somewhat down.
